From the software to the giant of steel

The products leaving the premises of the Boxberg-based SKM GmbH in Saxony have a weight of a few grams or even some hundreds of tons. In recent years, for instance, the company manufactured a swivel scraper of 36 m length and 14 m height (Fig.) for the salt industry in Saxony-Anhalt as well as four huge vibrating screens for the second largest steel producer in India, which are used for iron ore grading according to grain size. SKM (Sachsens Konstruktive Ma-schinenbauer – machine builders of Saxony) deliver everything one-stop, even for large projects. The employees plan, manufacture, assemble and program the plants up to the last screw including all extras and commission them locally after checking. After the predecessor, the company KMS, had declared insolvency in 2002, SKM was founded on the same premises six weeks later. In 2004 Lothar Kubitz, active partner of SKM, took over 100  % of the shares and built up a completely new business. SKM consider their core competence the development of large equipment for deep and opencast mining as well as intelligent conveying systems for bulk solids and packaged goods, in addition to the necessary programming and process automation. A possible expansion field could be North Rhine-Westphalia. The products from Lusatia should be particularly interesting for companies active in the Rhenish soft coal area between Cologne and Aachen, in power supply or in the processing industry. Furthermore, the latest findings of science are incorporated in the projects. Due to the cooperation with the colleges of advanced technology in Dresden, Cottbus, Zittau, Bautzen, Senftenberg and Görlitz, SKM is always up to date on technology. They could also imagine a close cooperation with technical universities and research institutes in North Rhine-Westphalia.
