WEG has set up a second facility in Portugal. The new manufacturing plant in Santo Tirso – with an investment volume of more than 30 million € now the largest WEG facility in Europe – has already begun production, thus considerably increasing the European capacities for low voltage motors. With the new facility, the Brazilian WEG company, takes another step towards the further expansion of its market position. The new production site has an area of approx. 45 000 m² and makes a future expansion to 100 000 m² possible. The existing facility in the Portuguese town of Maia is only 20 minutes away from the Santo Tirso site. Currently, more than 600 employees work at the two WEG production facilities in Portugal. The new facility was designed as a modern and efficient plant that interconnects automation with manual work: on the one hand, the focus is on maximum productivity, on the other hand it provides an environmentally- and  employee-friendly environment with safe and convenient working areas.

The new complex comprises production facilities for the manufacturing of low voltage motors with a high level of integration. This means that both efficient series production and flexible single-item production are possible. With the well-equipped modern test field, all required standardization tests can be carried out and most of the customers’ special requests can be fulfilled. The new facility enables WEG to reduce their delivery times for low voltage motors in Europe while increasing their production capacity in Maia at the same time. The focus of this facility is on the manufacturing of medium- and high-voltage motors with explosion-proof solutions. In addition, Maia will now expand the current portfolio and reinforce their in-house service offer along with their automation solutions.
