3rd Berlin Recycling and Raw Materials Conference, Berlin/Germany (04.–05.05.2010)

Key aspects of current political, legal, economic and technical developments will be the focus of the 3rd Berlin Recy-cling and Raw Materials Conference. The Waste Framework Directive issued by the European Union gives material recycling even higher priority than before. The requirements of the directive are currently being implemented in German law; a new version of the Closed Substance Cycle and Waste Management Act is being drawn up and will come into effect by the end of this year. At the same time, legal and organizational conditions for various material groups are being reformulated, which will have considerable consequences for industrial practice.

In the introduction, the speakers will present the resource and recycling strategy of the European Union, the implementation of the Waste Framework Directive in German law and therefore the requirements for the resources industry. The expectations and demands of the German states in respect of the national legislation will be discussed. Under the impact of the changed legal and economic conditions, the waste management companies are further developing their recycling strategies and adapting these to the raw materials markets. Prominent representatives from municipal organizations, the major waste management groups as well as the medium-sized companies will be presenting their strategic concepts. The demand of turning waste management into resource management will be discussed from different angles. Important aspects are, for example, the raw material markets and the availability of primary and secondary resources, energy and resource efficiency and derived from this the concrete prospects for recycling.

The second day of the Berlin Recycling and Raw Materials Conference is devoted to modern processing methods and metallurgical technologies as well as the various material groups. The recycling of waste to usable products has undergone amazing development in recent years; from the processing of raw materials, a separate discipline for waste processing has been developed. This is explained with reference to examples of comminution, electrostatic separation, pneumatic tables, automatic separating systems as well as plant engineering. In respect of the metallurgic processes, the speakers will report on utilizing raw materials in cast iron and steel production, the use of high-temperature processes, progress in the dezincification of scrap steel as well as requirements for recycling aluminium, rare metals and their compounds. With regard to raw materials, important aspects are the recycling of plastics, mineral materials and building materials, of vehicles, electric and electronic devices, batteries and photovoltaic modules. The papers will be supplemented by scientific models and field reports.
