Mining and extraction
Dr. Petra Strunk
Editor-in-chief AT MINERAL PROCESSING
Dear readers,
Canada is probably on many people‘s vacation bucket list. Unspoiled nature, vast landscapes, lots of snow in winter and a certain remoteness if you‘re not visiting one of the big cities – at least that‘s what I associate with Canada. From page 48 onwards, we read about another side of this country – as you would expect in AT MINERAL PROCESSING, it‘s all about mining. Canada is one of the leading countries with 430 000 direct employees and 250 mines. Canada ranks first in the extraction of potash (potassium carbonate) and third in the extraction of diamonds. The metal ore deposits are also diverse. Read the article by Dr. Joachim Harder: “Canada exceeds expectations – What makes Canada a leading mining nation?” (from p. 48).
The quartz market has grown steadily in recent years. For many applications, it is crucial to obtain the highest possible quality. TOMRA presents the challenges facing the mining industry in achieving the highest possible purity. Solutions using sorting technology are presented in order to achieve maximum added value with color and laser sorting. From page 32 onwards, you will find exciting details on the topic of “Sensor-based sorting – Maximum added value from the quarried quartz stone”.
Mining, albeit above ground, is also the subject of the article starting on page 40 “Overall package efficiently optimized – New CT55 / CT67 drill pipe for surface drilling rigs”. The new drilling system was tested at MHI in the Nieder-Ofleiden quarry, also known to many as the site of steinexpo. “When all components are perfectly matched to each other, impressive increases in results can be achieved,” Sandvik sums up.
