Redwave XRF - sorting with x-ray fluorescenceSummary: The REDWAVE XRF sorting system combines the REDWAVE technology from BR-Wolfgang Binder GmbH – an optical sorting system – with the X-ray fluorescence technology (XRF) from Olympus ANI. X-ray fluorescence is an elementary analysis method irrespective of moisture, colour and surface contaminations and offers many possibilities of application in the field of the sorting of valuable materials, enrichment based on characteristic elements and separation of interfering substances.
Principle of X-ray fluorescence (Fig. 1)
If material is exposed to highly energetic, electromagnetic radiation (1), e.g. emitted by an X-ray tube, electrons are removed from the union of atoms of the material (2). The consequence is the electron transition from the outer shells to the inner shells (3) releasing energy, which in turn is released as so-called secondary (characteristic) X-ray fluorescence radiation (4). Characteristic X-ray fluorescence radiation is element-specific, i.e. each element can be assigned to a certain energy. Thus, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the...
