Minerals

Dear Readers,

Have you already planned the upcoming New Year holidays? Maybe skiing or a trip to warm, sunny climes is on the program? “Travel” is also the topic in our market review by Dr.  Joachim Harder from p. 40. The distribution of raw materials does not necessarily correlate with the places where these raw materials are required. Transport is necessary - large quantities over long distances are usually brought by ship to the nearest port. Coal, ores, bauxite, fertilizers for example travel this way around the world. How sea transport developed in the past and what the future prognosis looks like is described in the article “World tour”.

In the treatment of rocks, rock powders are produced which cannot be reused, due to their small grain size. In the article “Rock powders as aggregates for hydraulic binders” (from p. 52), diabase, basalt, rhyolite and greywacke flours from quarries in Saxony and Thuringia are comprehensively characterized and subsequently partly thermally treated. On the basis of manufactured standard mortar prisms with different contents of rock flour or different degrees of cement substitution, the compressive strengths were tested and compared with reference samples.
