3-axle transport system for Kleemann crushers

Demolition companies know the problem only too well: transporting their crushers to the demolition site turns into a formidable organizational challenge as soon as the total weight of the articulated truck exceeds the 60-t limit. One of the reasons for this is the current handling of approvals for heavy load transports in Europe. To resolve this problem, Wirtgen Hamburg has developed a 3-axle dolly system with which the Kleemann crusher MC 110 Z EVO together with the traction unit, front and rear sections weigh less than 60 t (Fig. 1).

Jörg Saake, Managing Director at the Kleemann branch in Northern Germany, Wirtgen Hamburg, and the Kleemann specialist Frank Doberenz were repeatedly confronted with difficulties in obtaining transport approvals for the crushers, which together with a standard low loader weigh well over 60 t. As they weren’t able to find a simple solution on the market, they initiated the development of a special transport system for the MC 110 Z EVO, a highly efficient mobile jaw crusher with very effective prescreening on an independent double-deck screen.

The upshot of this development is a 3-axle dolly transport system consisting of front and rear sections (Fig. 2). The front section with kingpin as well as a holding fixture for the power chain and the connector panel is permanently fixed to the feed hopper of the jaw crusher. The 3-axle rear section is fixed below the discharge belt with a special holding fixture on the crusher and steered via the rear axle. In addition, it has an electronically controlled braking system with anti-locking. In addition, a fully lowerable drawbar enables manoeuvring and moving of the rear section after unloading.

The system boasts several advantages: loading and unloading of the crusher takes only little time; experience has shown that with one-man operation, just 30 minutes are needed. With a suitable tractive unit, the complete articulated truck weighs in at under 60 tonnes while width and height are below the critical dimensions as specified in the StVZO regulations.

In November 2014, Wirtgen Hamburg received acceptance by TÜV, the technical inspection board, and approval in accordance with § 70 StVZO. “Now, we are launching the sale and distribution of the 3-axle dolly, but we are already working parallel on the development of a similar solution for the MR 110 impact crusher,” explains Jörg Saake.
