Demanding demolition job with Sandvik BR333

Weimer Bau GmbH has long set high standards in
respect of its professionalism and workmanship. The specialist in demolition, earthwork and construction has grown from modest beginnings into a company with almost 500 employees and takes on jobs in a radius of 150 km from its company headquarters in Lahnau in the Lahn-Dill district of Germany. One recent and very demanding project in terms of logistics and technical aspects was the revitalization and expansion of the Poseidon House in Frankfurt am Main, in which Weimer Bau played a key role.

The actual demolition work began on 06.07.2011 and started with the demolition of the top part of a building to reduce the height from 60 m to 30 m. Because only limited space was available, small machines had to be used to remove the roof and ceiling. For environmental reasons and on account of the geographical location of the property, particular care was needed. The dust and noise nuisance had to be minimized. The regulations on noise emissions were a particular problem and three different demolition techniques were used.

To meet the challenges of the project, Weimer Bau looked for a new type of breaker that could deliver the required power in the difficult working conditions. In this situation the new BR333 from Sandvik Construction provided an ideal solution (Fig.). With its compact design, relatively low weight and impressive ratio of power to weight, the new breaker proved the optimum investment for Weimer Bau and this project. Moreover, the exceptional features of the breaker are supported by the outstanding replacement part and after-sales service provided by Sandvik, on which the long-established business relationship between Weimer Bau and Sandvik is founded.

Like the two other breakers of this series, BR111 and BR222, the BR333 hydraulic breaker combines simplicity and cost efficiency with a remarkable ratio of power to weight. For the Poseidon House project, this breaker was ideal because it is especially tailored to demolition and recycling applications. The streamlined, lightweight design of the breaker sets a new standard with regard to the ratio of power and weight. The three hydraulic breakers are developed for carriers in the range from 0.8-4.0 t. This caters for the different customer requirements. Moreover, like the two other breaker models, the BR333 boasts features that make it the optimum solution for this type of project:

• Suited to use in confined spaces

• Only one lower tool bushing

• One-piece compact design

• Very good price-performance ratio

• Built-in nitrogen storage

• A single guide element for the tool and only two moving components in the breaker

• User-friendliness

• No connecting pins and therefore less prone to damage by outside influences

In this project Weimer Bau moved a considerable volume of material: 180 000 m³ of the building volume was demolished and separated into its original components, which included comminution of 60 000 m³ reinforced concrete. For many jobs larger machines, which were already part of the Weimer Bau machine fleet, were used, including breakers, demolition and sorting grabs as well as cutters from Sandvik.
