The Centre for Resources and Energy (ZRE) is being built on the former site of the Stellinger Moor waste incineration plant in Hamburg’s Bahrenfeld district. This is one of the first facilities in Germany to sort residual waste in addition to thermal utilisation (waste incineration plant). As part of these construction measures, the company Regrata (Matthäi Group) is taking over the demolition of the old boiler house of the waste incineration plant. Schlüter is supplying the Sennebogen 870 E demolition excavator and an SV250R concrete crusher from NPK from its wide range of rental machines for this job.

Matthäi builds on versatile services – the subsidiary Regrata is a competent partner in demolition

Matthäi Bauunternehmen GmbH & Co. KG is a Europe-wide construction company based in Verden and is one of the largest construction companies in Germany. Matthäi has been a reliable partner for over 90 years and is now represented in all areas of the construction industry. Regrata was founded in 1997 as a subsidiary of the Matthäi Group and specialises in demolition, waste disposal and recycling. Based on decades of experience, the experts offer a comprehensive portfolio of services, from holistic planning to successful completion. Whether bridges, buildings, wind power or industrial plants – Regrata guarantees safe, professional and ecologically sustainable demolition and disposal measures.

The future of waste management

The aim of the current project is the construction of the Centre for Resources and Energy (ZRE) in Hamburg’s Bahrenfeld district. In the first facility of its kind in Germany, residual waste will be sorted in addition to thermal utilisation (waste incineration plant). In future, around 323 000 t of waste per year will be treated there. The ZRE will then be the third waste recycling plant of the Hamburg municipal waste management organisation. Once completed, these three plants will be able to cover up to 50 % of the district heating requirements of Hamburg households and thus offer a good opportunity to utilise waste efficiently as a resource. The ZRE is to form the central foundation stone for the “Realisation Stellinger Moor” concept, in which a climate-friendly business park is to be built in the immediate vicinity. The 15-ha site of a decommissioned sewage treatment plant will be used for this purpose. The energy supply for this will then be provided by the Centre for Resources and Energy.

The 870 E demolition excavator – precise and vibration-free

Before the inauguration of the ZER can be celebrated, however, some construction, dismantling and demolition work still has to be completed. During the work on the old boiler house, the long front demolition machine enables the targeted demolition of the northern wall of the existing bunker. With its operating weight of almost 117 t and a reach of up to 36 m, the Sennebogen 870 E is perfectly suited to the demanding demolition work in Hamburg. Even a densely built-up area or a building with a height of 10 storeys is no problem for the machine. The elevating and tilting cab provides an optimum overview of the work on the demolition object and its surroundings. Another highlight of the machine is the telescopic crawler undercarriage, which ensures both a narrow transport width and a high level of stability during operation.

Optimal addition – the NPK SV250R concrete breaker

To make the demolition of the boiler house at the waste incineration plant as efficient as possible, Regrata also opted for an SV250R concrete breaker from NPK. The attachment is predestined for long front use and, with its 1.2 m jaw width, is ideally suited for primary demolition of stable concrete structures. Like all NPK attachments, the concrete breaker is also equipped with the proven NPK booster system. This is activated automatically as soon as the jaws encounter resistance, thereby increasing the productivity and performance of the attachment enormously. The double cylinder, which guarantees a high crushing force, and the powerful rotary motor for precise positioning also impressed the customer.
