The meeting discussed various forms of governmental collaboration essential for the successful realization of the refinery project, which is anticipated to become operational by the end of 2027. The refinery is projected to produce 30 000 tons of LME-grade copper cathode and 5000 tons of battery-grade cobalt sulfate annually, significantly contributing to the DRC’s industrial growth and the local processing of critical minerals.
“The purpose of this meeting was to present the Buenassa refinery project to the Minister and to seek his support for this multifaceted initiative. A refinery is an industrial project that requires various forms of intervention and support, particularly in securing mineral supply to ensure operational viability, structuring collaboration with the State, and engaging with state-owned enterprises active in the mining sector,” stated Buenassa CEO Eddy Kioni.
During the discussion, the delegation highlighted several key elements that are central to the project’s success as:
- Raw Material Supply: Ensuring a steady supply of feedstock for the refinery through strategic partnerships with state-owned enterprises.
- Government Participation: Exploring the opportunity of direct or indirect government shareholding in the project.
- Energy Solutions: Addressing sustainable energy supply.
Minister Bussa reaffirmed his commitment to the country’s broader economic objectives, which include revitalizing state-owned enterprises, supporting public-private parternships and promoting local value addition in the mining sector.
He expressed his interest in the Buenassa project, acknowledging its alignment with the vision of His Excellency President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, to promote the local processing of strategic minerals and enhance economic development.
As Buenassa continues to advance the refinery project, currently developing its scoping studies, the company is committed to working in close collaboration with key government stakeholders, private sector partners, and local communities. This initiative is expected to create substantial economic opportunities, contribute to local employment, and support the broader goals of sustainable development in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
