New Order
Xstrata Copper has again ordered motors, drives and power-supply equipment, which are intended for an SAG mill and two ball mills, from the Siemens Industry Solutions Division. The ore mills are for use in a South American development project. Siemens received a similar order from Xstrata Copper in spring 2008. Siemens is responsible for engineering, manufacturing and supplying the electrical equipment of the ore mills. The SAG mill will be fitted with a gearless drive with an output of 24 MW. The ball mills will also be equipped with gearless drives, each of which will have an output of 16.4 MW. The scope of supply also includes transformers, protective equipment and operator control devices. Xstrata Copper is part of Xstrata plc., located in Brisbane, Australia, and operates mines as well as production plants in Argentina, Australia, Chile, Canada and Peru. The company is the fourth largest producer of copper in the world and has an annual production capacity of around one million
metric tons.
