Healthy earnings

Despite the severe recession in the global construction machinery industry, JCB managed to generate a profit in 2009. JCB did suffer a decline in sales by around a third to £1.35 bill./€ 1.62 bill., but nevertheless generated pre-tax profits of £ 29 mill./€ 34.8 mill. (2008: £ 28 mill./ € 33.6 mill.). In view of the global market for construction machinery, which declined by 46  % in 2009, with total sales of 36 000 units, JCB registered a new record with a market share of 12.2  %. This strengthens JCB’s position as the third largest construction machinery manufacturer worldwide. JCB also strengthened its leading position on the global market for backhoe loaders with more than 40  % market share and telescopic handlers with 28  %. JCB President, Sir Anthony Bamford, remarked that the construction machinery industry had experienced a strong upswing in the first six months of 2010, especially in growing markets such as India, Brazil and China, although the traditional markets in Western Europe and North America were still restrained. Overall, for 2010 he expects a considerable increase for JCB in sales figures and profits compared to 2009.
