Schöller Special Machines is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of tunnel excavators and special machines, which are also modified according to customer requirements for the respective application. As a certified Volvo SAS partner (Special Application Solutions), Schöller Special Machines (SSM) not only modifies tunnel excavators but also Volvo standard construction machines according to customer requirements. This means that the conversion of selected Volvo excavators to emission-free electric drive or Twin-Drive (Diese l+ Elektro) is also available. For this purpose, Volvo and its SAS partners offer a selection of different excavator sizes with electric or dual-drive on request. Emission reduction plays also an increasing role in, for example, raw material extraction or material handling or other exceptional applications. Even for this, electrification of the larger Volvo excavators up to the EC750 and EC950 is possible. SSM’s goal is to improve the sustainability, efficiency and productivity of its customers and partners through its machines and services.

SSM tunnel excavators are based on proven Volvo machines that are converted and upgraded for tough tunnel and mining applications. The current product range includes seven models from 7 to 47 t operating weight, with a choice of diesel or electric drive. The electrically powered excavators enable zero-emission operation on site, improve air quality for miners and help reduce the cost of ventilation.

SSM has developed the Volvo ECR58-T and ECR88-T mini tunnel excavators specifically for use in small tunnel profiles. In addition to diesel or electric drive, these machines are also available with the SSM Twin-Drive (diesel and electric drive). They are of course available as conventional compact excavators for the construction industry.

The Twin-Drive excavators can be operated fully diesel-hydraulically as usual. The additional integrated electric drive allows emission-free continuous operation on site, without restrictions due to limited battery capacity or charging times. A cable drum is installed for the mobility of the electrically driven excavator on site. Schöller Special Machines has many years of experience with the drive, also known as dual drive. The Twin-Drive concept can also be used in other Volvo excavator types.

In addition, as a Volvo SAS partner, SSM also offers customized modification of standard Volvo construction machines. For this reason, the conversion of  Volvo excavators to zero-emission electric drive or twin-drive (diesel and electric drive) is also available for these machines. Thus, Volvo offers a choice of different excavator sizes with electric or dual-drive on request, up to the large models for example in mineral extraction. These customized machines thus also reduce on-site emissions in their tailored applications.
