Highly efficient surface deposition – The Herding® BETA
Until now, the use of sintered rigid-body media was limited to a continuous operating temperature of 100 °C. Customers and operators were therefore unable to use the proven properties for processes with higher temperatures. The classic Sinter-Plate Filters with PE-based base materials can be used up to an operating temperature of 70 °C and as a thermostabilised variant up to 100 °C. It therefore made sense to push ahead with a development that combines the unique properties with operating temperatures above 100 °C.
Proven technology transformed into new solutions
For many decades, the proven technology has been based on the pure surface filtration typical of Herding. This characteristic prevents the irreversible accumulation of fine particles inside the filter medium. This results in almost constant pressure loss curves and therefore uniform operating behaviour of the Sinter-Plate Filter.
The combination of a rigid sintered structure and a coating tailor-made for the application makes the sinter-plate filter so durable and efficient. Guaranteed clean gas values at the detection limit speak for themselves, even with the finest dusts.
Filtration-related wear is reduced to a minimum as the robust filter medium is not exposed to the permanent flexing of conventional flexible media. The rigid matrix with the filter-active layer remains intact and undamaged over the entire life cycle, even with abrasive dusts and high raw gas concentrations.
This characteristic leads to another outstanding property of the rigid medium with surface coating. With conventional filter systems, there is a risk of dust breakthrough, which is why the literature specifies dust Ex zone 22 for the clean gas chamber of the filtering separators. However, this problem does not occur with the dimensionally stable Herding® Sinter-Plate Filter. The filter medium acts as a dust Ex zone barrier. No dust-explosive atmosphere is created in the clean gas compartment and therefore no dust Ex zone. This unique property is described in VDI 2263, Sheet 6 and Sheet 6.1 and confirms the sustainable, passive and active safety of this technology.
Using development to benefit the operator
Herding’s ongoing mission when developing new filter media is to extend the proven performance of classic sinter-plate filters to other areas of application and at the same time open up new areas, markets and industries.
The detailed development and research work initially focussed on the search for suitable materials, which had to meet the technical production requirements. Resistance to chemical and thermal influences, homogeneous sinterability and high requirements on strength and toughness played a decisive role here. Once the material basis had been created, the focus of development was on realising the filtration properties typical of Herding® rigid-body filter media, such as constant pressure losses, high separation efficiency and all other characteristic features.
The raw material selected for the Herding® BETA is a high-quality, temperature-resistant thermoplastic polymer material that is used as a rigid sintered matrix. In combination with the homogeneously embedded filter-active coating, this choice of material makes it possible to effectively utilise the numerous advantages of pure surface filtration at continuous operating temperatures of up to 160 °C. In addition, the combination with the proven sinter-plate structure sets new standards in filtration technology for almost all industries.
Properties such as excellent hydrolysis resistance, high chemical and optimum pH resistance (1 – 10), a low clean gas value of <0.5 mg/Bm³, food-compliant design, reduced cleaning pressures, a completely fibre-free filter medium and suitability for ATEX applications are impressive.
Focus on future-oriented processes
Although the official market launch of the Herding® BETA sinter-plate filter took place in 2021 and under pandemic conditions, already more than 80 systems are now in the field. Operators and customers can use Herding Sinter-Plate technology for processes with higher temperatures and benefit from pure surface filtration. The innovative filter medium was also honoured with the Best of Industry Award in the process engineering category.
The innovative medium-temperature filter technology now plays a decisive role in numerous pioneering processes that depend on reliable and efficient filtration technology. Herding® BETA is unmatched in product recovery and has proven successful in key technologies such as battery production, biomass combustion, hydrogen and carbon production as well as in the food and chemical industries. The advanced filter medium also offers considerable advantages in additive manufacturing, foundries and the building materials industry.
