Dear Readers
Economic development without creativity and courage for research giving new momentum? Unthinkable! One of the most important driving forces of technical innovations, in particular in the field of raw material extraction and processing, has been the Freiberg Mining Academy Technical University since its foundation 250 years ago. This refers not only to the German-speaking area, but it also led to an international reputation. Far removed from the ivory tower, “the world’s oldest mining and mineral resources academy” has, in addition, always succeeded in developing economically efficient technical solutions through knowledge and technology transfer - also thanks to its education in step with actual practice. You will find reports and an interview regarding the 250th anniversary in Freiberg in the current issue.
Against the background of the fact that the decrease in valuable mineral contents in the ores requirer higher throughput rates, Dr. Harder reports on the progress in flotation in the processing of metal ores. A successful example of the optimization of flotation plants has been the development of a massive flotation cell by FLSmidth promising higher productivity with lower capital and operational costs.
Under the heading Focus Industry you will find further reports on the use of further technical developments covering the extraction and processing of mineral raw materials.
