World’s largest mill
ABB won an order from Newmont Mining Corporation to engineer three gearless mill drive (GMD) systems to be installed at the Yanacocha Minas Conga oxide copper gold project in Peru. Fluor Corporation in Santiago, Chile, will act as EPCM contractor for this important project; Metso Corporation will be the mill supplier. The Conga project is located in Peru, approx. 900 km north of Lima, at an altitude of 4100 m above sea level. It is situated near the Newmont Yanacocha gold mine, where an ABB GMD has been operating successfully since early 2008. The contract includes the engineering for a 28 megawatt GMD system for a 42’ SAG (semiautogenous) mill, the world’s largest mill in diameter. In addition, it includes the engineering for two 15.6 mw GMD systems for two 26’ ball mills.
